Noted as a “special player with remarkable phrasing,” violinist Karen Lord-Powell has pursued a varied career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and teacher. She has appeared as Concertmaster of the Louisville Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Miami Bach Society, and under the batons of Leon Fleisher and Victor Yampolsky. Past solo work includes appearances with the Glenelg Chamber Orchestra, the Northwestern Chamber Orchestra as concerto competition winner, and in recital at the National Governor’s Convention in Washington, D.C. Karen teaches violin, orchestral repertoire, and string pedagogy at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where she incorporates improvisation and wellness into traditional classical approaches. She performs regularly with the Naples Philharmonic, the South Beach Chamber Players, and with her husband, double-bassist Brian Powell, as part of the Radnor Duo. Karen spends her summer as a tenured member of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in Western New York state. She considers it a personal challenge to fit everything–including her husband’s double bass, their two kids, and their dog–into the car for the yearly summer trip.
