Jakob Gerritsen

DOUBLE BASS

Jakob Gerritsen is a second-year Bass Fellow at the New World Symphony. Prior to joining NWS, he was based in Cleveland and maintained an active freelance career, performing with the Canton Symphony, Akron Symphony and Firelands Symphony. Additionally, he has performed with the Spoleto Festival U.S.A., served as a substitute musician with the Charleston Symphony, and as an Associate Member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

Originally from Carpentersville, Illinois, Jakob began his studies on the double bass in the public school system and in high school began studying privately with Timothy Shaffer. He went on to pursue a dual degree program at Northwestern University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in organizational development and a bachelor’s degree in music performance, studying with Andrew Raciti. He then received his master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Scott Dixon.

Outside of playing the bass, Jakob enjoys being outside while biking, swimming and hiking, and also enjoys trying out new food and coffee.
